I use it in the Harbor (saltwater) and in the local lakes (fresh water) and it has never failed to show me everything I need to know whether anchored, drifting or going 30 M.P.H.I highly recommend Garmin. This model (FF 140) is an entry level fish finder, but it does everything I need for a day of fishing. I'm glad I bought Garmin. I bought Garmin because I heard nothing but bad things about Hummingbird finders. It has a very large read-out screen. The specs say the screen is 4", but it is actually 4.7" when measured diagonally (the way ALL screens are measured).
The only issue that I'm trying to figure out is that sometimes I get different bottom depth readings using the different frequencies (wide cone v. I've played with the gain, sensitivity, etc. and found that the auto settings usually work the best. The Garmin 140 is well made; solid case and transducer/battery connector, the membrane buttons have a nice feel to them and the mounts for transducer and screen are good. narrow). One other caveat; just because you see the fish doesn't mean that you can catch them. I've had it on the water about 6 times already and had good luck with it. You can read the screen easily in full sumlight. Auto settings work well so you can quickly use it right out of the box.
Does all I need. Very good value for money. Great entry level unit.
I am very satisfied with this unit especially considering the price. The more expensive one on my boat does not tell me depth at full speed. I purchased this unit as a secondary dephfinder on my fishing boat. This one even tells me the depth when I'm motoring full speed across the water (20 mph). This is a great unit for the money. I was curious to see how it would compare to my other dephfinder that cost twice as much (not a Garmin). The Garmin works just as well, and in some cases better than the other brand that cost more.
It is very accurate and doesn't flake out like an older Piranha Max unit I had previously. I am really pleased with it. Also a great price. I use this primarily as a depth finder, instead of a fishfinder. I got it because Garmin claims it reads depth accurately in shallow water.
